X told me that I needed to post a "real post"! Apparently my last post wasn't a real post! Its cool, I hope this one is real enough for you! lol
Let me start off with self. I realized that I have been cussing way to much. I need to curve that because I used to never cuss at all. I am going to consciously make a decision to think about what I say before I say it to decrease the amount of vulgarity proceeding from my mouth. I'm just wanting to better myself, and I believe that is what life is about, making yourself better!
Let me tell you what was bothering me. This N word (NIGGER). I want to include the derivatives of this word as well: nigga, nikka, my nig, niggaz etc.. This word has all types of history to it. Painful history that has racism attached to it. Nigger was a word that White People used to demonstrate their assumed power over Africans, African Americans and black people. They used the word when they beat them, treated them unfairly, and they let the word fly from their tongues as often as the word "the"!
Now what's bothering me is how over such a short time the once hated word by all black people has become a standard greeting! The only justification is by dropping some letters. Same sound
and can even confused for NIGGER. Its acceptable though. Your grandfather, or great grand father could of been beat being called such but you as a black person use it in everyday language like nothing is wrong with it! You tear each other down little by little every time you say it!

Can someone please tell me why you would do this? Why?
Do you use the word NIGGER or any of its derivatives? The poll is to the left, be honest!

Lol finally a "Real" post. But yeah I know the word NIGGER has a lot of history and is a derogatory word, How I came to use the word so freely I dont know. It was basic hood talk when I was growing up... until I learned the background of the word. I felt bad for using it after the fact ,but I just cant seem to hold back the urge to say it. I say NIGGER just as much as you say God Bless You...(sorry for using GOD in the same sentence.)I tried to take your lil challenge by not cursing or saying Nigger for 2 days ..umm yea that lasted all of 15 mins. Im sorry but I cant lol,but I will try to refrain when we are in each others presence.
Nigga LOL
Fuzzy, I know how easy it is to get "caught up" in the world around us. I am so reminded of a phrase that my grandmother used to say to me all the time 'Be IN the world, not OF the world'. What I took that to mean is, I can live my life in the world but not conform to my surroundings.
I will not lie and say I've never used the word Nigga, Nikka, etc, but after a deep rooted conversation with a friend of mine, I have completed banned it from my vocabulary. It wasn't easy in the beginning, but with a conscience effort, I was able to release it from my daily conversations.
Where I have a problem with it, is the fact that we as Blacks, Negros, African American's (however you clasify yourself) find it accepting to refer to one another as such, but as soon as someone outside our race says it, all hell is going to break loose (ie Don Imus).
I've even gone as far as to ask my friends/associates who have called me that not to. Not make a big deal of it, but just simply say "please don't call me that" and keep the conversation going. Surprisingly, they've all respected my wishes.
I don't foresee that word going anywhere any time soon, but I know for a fact that if I'm not part of the solution, then I'm part of the problem.
Good post. I guess I have X to thank for it, huh? LOL
no I do not use it or any derivative and hate what the word symbolizes, especially the ignorance of people when they say they are turning the word around to be something positive. Like really do you know how you sound when you say some dumb shit like that.
But no I do not use it.
Honestly, it is very easy to find yourself doing and saying things that you normally wouldn't do. Isn't it interesting how easily we are influenced or shaped by our circle of friends, spheres of associates and daily environments. I too had this problem with profanity in high school. Even though I can never claim to have virgin ears I must say that I wasn't raised to curse all the time, but found myself cursing in EVERY sentence, in EVER situation and ALL THE TIME! Including the "N" word. I had to bring myself into check when someone asked me "where is the real Jay at?". but what boggles my mind is that for most people is it extremely easy to conform to negative standards and yet a challenge for us to embrace and adapt positive ones.
Good for you in tryin to curve ur language. If u feel that's wut u need/want to do u know I support u..but umm don't expect me to succeed in holding my tongue cuz u know that I'm not known for doing that lol. But I will attempt to try.
I'm wit u X...i tried not cussin and i didn't make it past 5 mins...dumb ass people and damn students lol...Never tried not sayin Nigga cuz that's unfortunatley been incorporated into my vocabulary and its a daily word. I'm not condoning it's use jus stating the truth. I'm quite aware of the history behind the word and have done my research. But I will try (maybe).
nothing beats a try but a fail!
It is an ignorant word for ignorant people!
I use it sparingly and now hear it more when I do...like you, it bothers me...yeah, we need to curb our tongue....we need to choose our words wisely. Like all bad habits, it needs to stop.
Yes, I call Niggas out when I see some niggerish stuff going on. I did that just for you...lol. How is everything going? Give us a better update than that! Nice picture in the left corner....go head fuzzy.
No.
Thats not even in my "regular" vocab...I just didnt grow up using it at all.
Good Luck on cutting-down on the cussing!
;-)
I voted no. My bro and his friends do use it a lot, especially in their raps so I've grown immune to it.
Admittedly, I've used it when I'm feeling arrogant and annoyed with some ignorant SOB's (exceedingly rare) but NEVER outside the privacy of my home and NEVER around those of another ethnicity. My civil rights marching grandfather always made sure we had class and dignity so there's no way I could incorporate that word into my daily conversations. Furthermore, I don't have a lot of black friends (I'm part of my own little U.N.) so it's not something passed around in my social circle.
Good luck on your efforts and as far as I'm concerned, your posts are always real. It's your blog, do what you want (sorry X, no disrespect!)
I'm guilty! I use the word nigga here and there when referring to certain men in my life.
i must do better and replace the word starting today i will give it a try. :)
Um, I use it only when talking nasty... uh.. is that okay?
And I swear, but not to excess.
Ugh.... OK I do cuss too damn much! And I do call my cousins that because dammit.... they need they asses whooped!
From a linguistic point of view, it is useful to note that "nigger" was neutral in its inception in the 17th century. This book makes a great informational/educational reading on the topic, "Nigger: The strange career of a troublesome word", Vintage Publishing, ISBN-10: 0375713719. Yes black folks should read this book too.
why issit that white folks tell their kids not to use the N word... but black folks don't ? why?
Hey, wassup Fuzzy.
Other than during sex, I don't use the word.
What's amazing is that where I live there are Dominicans and Puerto Ricans and they are calling each other the N word.
Go figure.
Reading the comments, I think it's mainly become so commonplace that it's inculcated in people's vocabularies before they even seriously realize why they shouldn't say it.
I don't really use it though I do think I get the reasoning. I don't know; I guess I already blogged about this recently.
I refuse to believe that we don't have control over what comes out of our mouths! How can someone say that it has built in to your daily diction but you can watch what you say in certain places? We can go to church, knowing you/we can cuss like crazy but bite our tongue in the house of God! We can be as bitter and racist towards a race but cupress our emotions when we have to deal with them in the work place to earn that paycheck at the end of the week! Don't for one minute anybody say you can't, say you WON'T!
You WON'T remember how that offends people around you when you speak! You WON'T remember the pain that surrounds the word when you speak! You WON'T think about what you will say before you say it! For not wanting to better yourselves, you are just as bad as the white racists who used the word to oppress blacks!
I was speaking to someone and it triggered emotion. Not targeting anyone, but if you feel targeted, examine yourself!
I agree with you Fuzz. African Americans should never use the N word. To many people died so that we as a race can gain respect and a sense of dignity. When we use the word as freely as we do I believe we look ignorant as if we don't know we are demeaning one another.
I pray we all will pledge to enver use the word again.
Yes I use one of the derivatives from time to time and find that when I am in STR8 mode I tend to use it more or when I am doing the nasty by calling the other masculine source or partner " what you want niggah this.... you get the picture.
I have been a Negro, Black and now African American and no matter how time moves on that N word follows us. Don't let it bother you or rent space in your head.
Yup - I use the word nigga quite frequently. It's a part of my vocab and I don't think I'll change it. I use it when I'm speaking in my comfortable dialect around certain people. Like with anything language has its place. I'd never use this outside of the realm of family and some friends. I think in that instance, it's cool. Other than that, it becomes offensive and words hurt people.
Forget X - he ain't nobody!
Excuse me.....First of all when I meant a real post . I meant that in a joking way, Fuzzy always comes with the bangn post so what are you saying sir.
Fuzzy, Your last post was a post It was missing that special ingredient that keeps me sitting at the table waiting for seconds. I got the public annoucemant about the new blog down pack ..I was just looking for the post inside the post. It is what it is....
Mr. X, why is it that people sem to set you off? I've only been here just a short time and it is evident you have a short fuse. Lets enroll you into a 2 step program lol!
J/k
I like His posts too. The more blogs I stumble across, the more I see his name out there! He places effort into his posts and is very real with his approach. Very heartful, sometimes lengthly LOL but he's cool none the less!
The N word, hmmm I've heard across the pulpit in my church visits. I hear it in colleges by faculty members. It is said by a diverse group of people. Whites, latins, and blacks alike. I don't believe its going anywhere anytime soon. I do agree that if we want it removed it will be so! Do we really want it removed is the question!
what did you do with the new post that i just finished reading and now it's not up for me to comment?....what's really going on?
what up fuz, my take on the "N" word as we call is that we give that word more meaning and power then it deserves. Yes our grandparents and so forth had been called that word and were still being called it now. My thing is how do you give a word that much power to where people (especially of a different race) know when to use it, whether its to get us fired from a job, kicked out of somewhere or what have you. In my eye a person calling me or using the "N" word is just like any other word that we consider bad and has no effect on me. Look at the word bitch which derives from a female dog, If anything i would hate to be called a bitch then a word that is defined as just an offensive word to call a black person, it has no real meaning. How do you give a person enough power to start you up or shut you down in one word.that word can only have as much power and meaning then you give it..and thats my time PEACE!!
I really wouldn't say the word enrages me nor sets me up! yes words only have enough power as we give them. Pardon my language, but what if someone stood in your face and repeatedly called you a nigger and a bitch ass nigga? or maybe not to you directly but around you? don't you tell me that you won't be at the very least a lil bothered! cause i've tried it, it will eventually break someone!
It's sad when niggers won't even sign their names to comments and come to your blog talking shit trying to hide behind anonymity because they don't like how a grown fucking man run his shit.
Just a little tit for tat. Don't come back to my blog with that bullshit. Oh wait, you can't. Whatever.
I am not even going to stoop to the level that you're currently at. However I will defend myself! I don't have a blog therefore I can't sign off on the comment. If i did leave my name, nobody would know who I was anyway? Its a sad day really! Its people like you that fuzzy is talking about in this post!
Just because you came for me, I leave my name so All will know who I am!
I try not to use that word or any like it at all. I don't want other people to hear it so much that they become inclined to use it and I don't know what is their true intent. So to make it easier for everyone, I just try not to use it.
