While the previous post was one on a very lighter note, I would like to pose you a question. I receive a daily quote to my cell phone. Usually I use them as wake up calls, however a paid attention to this one. Below is a survey that I would like you to answer. I would appreciate a comment left behind in addition to the answer whether you are anonymous or generate a fake name. I did send this out to quite a few bloggers via text, so this will be a repeat for them.
Here is the Quote: "We only think when we are confronted with a problem." John Dewey

Seems like the vote is almost equal. There were votes that were not accounted for because they were responses via text! (this pushed the vote in favor of Yes!)

I believe that at our present day in society, we are used to machines doing the work for us. Due to the lack of good parents, I believe the upcoming generations (due note the "s") will be even more helpless and lazy. Our society is conditioning us to do less. I honestly believe that we DON'T think unless we have to! More to be said later...
the quote is the problem ;-)
you can argue this a thousand ways based on how you individually choose to define "think" and "problem".
for example, arguably you have to "think" just to walk up a flight of stairs.. stairclimbing is not an autonomic response or a reflex; and arguably stairs are not usually a "problem" but an obstacle to surmount.
errrmm fuzzy honey.., are you really willing to give up that convection oven or that professional grade mixer ????
Hey Fuzzy,
I can only speak in reference to myself. I am a thinker. I think all the time. Nothing has to be wrong or going on in my life. I'm always thinking of was to improve myself (that is not to say that there is anything wrong or there is really a problem), I'm thinking about how to show appreciation to people that come into my life. I do agree with what you said about the upcoming generation. Society has made it impossible to be without a cell phone, television remote controls, ipods.. It's really a sad state. I for the last 5 months have not really sat down to watch television. I have been spenging more time reading and trying to stimulate my brain that way.
By the way, just heard on the news today that they are paying students $8.00 in ATL to attend a study hall to get there grades up and if they get them up to a B or better they can qualify for $150.00. Now that is sad..
I know I got off the subject. Sorry.
But I don't believe the statement is true for all. Plus you have to consider that John Dewey was the same person that said " education was not to prepare people for life but was life itself" I hope I didn't misquote.
Peace and Blessings

How can you not think unless
you have to...you read,you go
threw daily motions ...we as humans
are always thinking whether we do
it knowingly or unknowingly...
we cant help it...manchild
I do not require a problem to 'think'. I've always been forward looking so I tend to plot and plan certain things to mitigate any problems. "Proper preperation prevents piss poor performance."

I agree with Ponoono's take on the quote. I will say this, I think just about all the time. I believe it is the artist in me. Mhy mind is constantly at work. Some times to the point that I it keeps me up. Yeah, that verges on Insanity. However, as a cop, I run into people that I don't think at all...even when faced with a problem. Take care, Fuzzy.
There are many social problems in this society that I am always trying to think of a solution. At first I answered No, but for me, I really have to answer yes. My mind is always thinking and figuring and etc. etc. etc.
Wassup Fuz, I would have to agree. WE comtemplate more when we are faced with problems. Choices tend to come to us easy with little to no effort.
I agree with some of the others. We think all the time even when there is no problem. Even if that thinking is just dreaming.
I can appreciate the quote, but for most people we tend to think constantly not just when problems present themselves, we are able to avoid problems simply because we tend to think, and you are right we have become quite relaxed with technology thinking for us at work and even in our homes. Today we do less thinking, but overall we since tend to think way before the problem.
Fuzzy,
You're a teacher. Without presenting a "problem" how would you students learn the application of knowledge. Experiences come by problems we encounter and the application of knowledge perpetuates wisdom. While teaching students knowledge, you have to ensure that the knowledge is applied accurately and only that can be done by putting problems before them.
Yes sir!!!!!
I agree
I am thinking all of the time. From the time I get up!
There is no such thing as problems, only solutions. This works 4 me.
Its Tru often ENOUGH
Not totally!
Hey u. I don't think its true. lol
Absolutely Not! How could this be true?
